Tales From The Labyrinth - Hints and Tips to get you started
Tales From The Labyrinth has now launched on itch.io and I hope that everyone is enjoying it. It’s a challenging game with a lot of hidden tricks and strategies to discover so I’ve compiled a list of useful hints to help you all on your way. Have fun trying to conquer the Labyrinth!
-Your Fullness will gradually decrease as you explore the stages and will need to be restored by eating bread. If your Fullness falls to zero you will begin to starve and will lose 1 HP every turn. Eating bread when starving will enable you to regain some Fullness and no longer be in starvation status.
-You can regain some HP at the cost of a few Fullness points by pressing the D key. This will enable you to quickly regain health. Pressing the X key allows you to stand still and skip a turn, without affecting your HP.
-All attacks in this game hit, there are no missed hits and no dodging. This applies to both the player and the monsters.
-Attack damage is calculated as the sum of your Strength plus the Weapon Strength of your equipped weapon. Most monsters do not have any defence, so your attacks will do the maximum damage. You can equip shields to reduce the damage you take from enemy attacks, with the Shield Defence value being the amount that the damage will be reduced by.
-Stronger weapons and shields appear the further you advance through the game.
-Try to learn what abilities each type of monster has and adapt your strategy accordingly. You should try and keep your distance from monsters such as the Lich (who can freeze you) or the Hydra (causes confusion). Some monsters can only use their special ability once while others can use their ability without limit.
-Undead monsters such as the Ghost, Lich, Zombie and Reaper can be damaged by casting the Healing Staff at them or throwing healing items such as health potions.
-Watch the monsters carefully and observe how they move, there are a number of different AI patterns in the game and not all monsters will behave in the same way. Learn which monsters will chase you and which ones can be easily avoided.
-If a Creeper steals one of your items you can recover it by defeating the Creeper.
-Most status effects wear off after a certain amount of turns however poison status (which stops HP regeneration) lasts for as long as you are on the current stage. As soon as you go to the next stage the poison will be cured. You can also cure poison by drinking an Antidote Potion.
-Traps only appear in rooms, they never appear in corridors.
-Monsters are not affected by the traps.
-If you equip Arrows, you can press the A key to shoot them without having to go through the inventory menu.
-If you drink a Health Potion or a Restore Potion when your HP is at maximum your maximum HP will increase by a few points. Also, if you eat bread when your Fullness is at maximum this will also increase your maximum Fullness by a few percent.
-The number that appears in brackets in the name of Staff items is the number of uses that staff has. When that number is zero you can not cast that staff’s spell any more but you can get one final use of the spell by throwing the staff at an enemy.
-Using the Preserve Scroll will cause all bread currently in your inventory to be preserved so that it can not go rotten. Preserved bread items have [P] after their name in your inventory. Stepping on a Rotten Trap will have no effect if your bread is preserved.
-Rotten Bread can be eaten and will restore a little fullness but you will also lose some HP and suffer a randomly chosen negative side effect such as poison status or loss of strength. Try throwing Rotten Bread at enemies as they will also receive a negative effect.
-The Sealing Scroll and Sealing Staff are very useful items for dealing with monsters with powerful abilities. The monster will be unable to use its special ability (for example the Hydra's confusion attack or the Mage's magic spells) and will only be able to attack normally. This can render some of the most powerful enemies in the game much easier to overcome.
-Beware cursed items! If you equip a cursed item you will not be able to remove it, unless you find and use an Uncurse Scroll. You can also remove equipped cursed items by finding and stepping on an Unequip Trap.
-If you are in a sticky situation, use your items! While it may be tempting to try to save items for later, it's often better to just use them and ensure your survival for a little longer. When you die you lose everything in this game and items are of no use to you if you're dead!

Can I say that I thought of nearly all of these tips in the original game? I played this game so much back in 2018 that I began to learn and understand the game, which helped me get so far. I still enjoy this game till this very day. I did modify the game a little, which is disappointing I know, but the only things I modified were Player and Enemy Damage Output, and Level up rewards. I was trying to make the game a little easier, but harder at the same time. I have a habit of tinkering with other games for the fun of it.
Anyway, let me get back on topic. The game is indeed very challenging. Comparing the OG and the newer version, the newer version is much easier, but a bit harder at the same time. It's easier because most attempts are not too RNG dependent anymore like the original. For example, what type of item spawns in each floor. Now as of it being a bit harder, I can no longer get the best equipment, The Hero Sword and Shield, early in the game.
I have a lot to say about this game, mostly the enemies, but i'll keep it short so my mind doesn't go all over the place. This is by far one of the best games I've played and I give it a 10/10! I love every improvement/change to the game, so keep up the hard work! And don't worry, I'll gladly keep trying to beat this game, maybe i'll recommend it to some of my friends. Anyway, that's all for now! Later! :D
Thanks so much for all your kind words about the game! I really do appreciate it, I worked really hard on Tales From The Labyrinth and tried to make it as good as I can, so to hear that you're really enjoying it is great to see.
I'm really glad you liked the original Petit Computer version too, I don't mind at all about you modifying it, I used to do that with Petit Computer games too, and still do it today with Pico-8 games as well! By modifying the code you learn a lot about how games work and it's fun to see if you can change it to make the game better. Part of why I wanted to make this new version of TFTL was because I thought the game balance in the original PTC version was really unfair, the original ended up being a lot harder than I intended and I wanted there to be a re-balanced version available that was still a challenge but also where the player stood more of a chance of progressing.
Part of the re-balancing was changing to a simpler method for calculating damage, and changing the fighting system so that all attacks now hit, as the amount of times you would miss in the PTC version was often infuriating. Also, as you point out you can no longer get the Hero Sword and Shield early in the game, but this also means that the enemies are balanced according to the level you are and equipment you have available at each stage.
I'd like to hear what you think about the enemies, whether they are too hard/too easy/too annoying or anything else, and any other thoughts on the game as well. Posting here or in the comments on the game's page is fine, let me know if you can get to the end too!
Thanks again for all your comments about the game, I'm really pleased that you are enjoying it so much (thanks for the 5 star rating on the game page too!) and if you do decide to recommend it to any of your friends that would be great as well!
Hope you continue to have fun in your journeys in to the Labyrinth!
Hey again! I ran through the game again and encountered a glitch that ended my run. Got to Stage 25, where I fought a Death Knight that ended up on top of my character, and soft locked the game. I believe this glitch occurred because I was playing the game too fast.
Also, if you have Discord, then we can chat there if you'd like to, unless there is a chat function on this website.
Thanks for letting me know about the glitch, I'll have a look and see if I can find what might be causing it. At the moment I'm not sure if this is something specific to HTML5 or a flaw in the turn update sequence in the game logic. I don't have Discord, but any comments about the game whether good or bad are welcome on any of my pages here!
Not a problem! I'll rerun through the game and probably beat it this time. I'll keep you updated if there are anymore glitches.
I've now made a few modifications to the movement and turn order code and uploaded a new version of the game to the page. This should fix the glitch but if it does happen again let me know! Also let me know if you do manage to beat the game too!
